The company has found three piece of malware pretending as mobile gaming or special offers which infects Symbian S60 3rd and 5th edition devices. The company took the gauge of the number of mobile phones that have been infected and the result is no laughing matter because there may be 100,000 handsets have got into trouble. And all of them could be used to form a mobile botnet.

The malware will cause destructions without any notice of you. It will secretly send messages to all the contacts of the address book directly, or send messages to bitrary phone numbers by connecting to a server. And all the messages will be deleted from Outbox/Sent and SMS log in half a sec. That makes it impossible for users to find problem before they go to check the phone bills.

But Symbian Foundation has come out to set the mind of the people at ease by revoking the Symbian Signed certificates used to sign the malware and they also said there is no proof that the malware is using handsets in a botnet. Furthermore, they just think the threat is very minor.

Better to believe the worst, and be pleasantly surprised, than to be optimistic and learn the worst. You’d better check your bills now.
